Okay, not really related to anything I remember being discussed here, but why are some people calling Mijumaru's evolution a "Samurai Otter"

It doesn't really look anything like a samurai, it looks like a fisherman. o_O Or is it just the whole "Oh Japan! Mt. Fuji Geisha Sukiyaki!!" thing where everything is a samurai, ninja, or geisha girl and all Japanese food is sushi

Hmm, well while I started off pretty convinced it was based on Shanghai -  given the first non-celebrity black trainer, football playing trainer, Musicals (which look like a nod to Broadway), prairie dogs with a Native American motif, the ultra Euro-Western knights of old thing going on with the Team and with the crown shown at the beginning, and what appears to be (though I could be wrong) a less modern train system - I am starting to believe this might, in fact, be based more on New York.  Though I could still be wrong.

It's a really ambiguous setting, for sure. With the various types of creatures I was confident maybe something like Rio or another large South American city. That was based on the known pokemon. The landscape is definitely similar to Shanghai. The first thing that got me thinking about america was the "Liberty Ticket" with Vicinti which automatically made me think of Lady Liberty.

Perhaps we're in the United States of Southern China? I jest.

Edit: Why the change from contests to musicals?

Because guys like me think contests are horribly girly and never touch them. Musicals on the other hand are bloody tales of revenge and super villains fighting their arch-nemesis.

A lot of the previous games have also had things that looked totally-not-Japanese, so I don't think certain Pokemon designs would be indicative of anything. Trainers though, I dunno. Maybe they're like "ISSHU IS FOREIGN, SO LET'S ADD AS MANY OBVIOUSLY-NOT-JAPANESE THINGS AS WE CAN THINK OF"

Though I would like to see those giant desert wastelands of Manhattan someday Tongue I hear those sandstorms are a real nuisance. I can't imagine the landscape, at the least, being based off anything other than China

Sinnoh and Hoenn both have desert areas, and are based off Japanese islands. (Well, the island the desert is on in Sinnoh is based off a Russian island, but the statement still stands.) Where the hell is the desert there?

The landscape for the regions are based pretty damn loosely off whatever. None of them stick strictly to reality, for obvious reasons.

(Giant ice caves, volcanoes, tree houses, deserts, whirlpool-y islands... I'm sure that every single landmark in the Pokemon world so far is based off a real-life counterpart in Japan!)

Everyone cares so much where it's based off, and the way that Anthy was talking down to pure speculators is getting me angry.

It's a goddamn game.

Pokemon isn't a game, it's a lifestyle choice!

Because it's obv. the most pressing issue in modern society.

But really, saying the entire region is a section in one city that doesn't really look like it at all... I could argue that Isshu must be based on Topeka or something (the nothingness surrounding it is represented by mountains!! and there was an old train line running through it!!! Team Plasma is Westboro!!!!). Some contents of the Pokemon regions are rarely ever like their real-world counterparts (otherwise it'd be boring), but there are always some very specific similarities with the design of the landscape, and some specific landmarks.

No it doesn't really matter, but it's an "oh cool" thing.

I almost choked on my milk.  “You shed your skin?  Like a snake?”
